About Us
Four in five people in the world who are blind or visually impaired suffer from preventable or treatable causes of blindness. We are committed to eliminating all reversible and preventable causes of blindness and severe visual impairment.
We strive for efficiency and cost-effectiveness, with self-sustainability as our goal, but we believe that sight is priceless. We will not be deterred by the challenges involved in delivering eye care to the poor and needy in hard to reach places.
New Sight Eye Care is a non-profit organisation dedicated to empowering and partnering with local communities to preserve and restore sight. It was established as a registered charity in 2012 and the winner of the International Excellence in Ophthalmology Vision Award (XOVA) 2012.
We recognise that while eye health services are inadequate in many low-income countries, they are non-existent in northern Congo. That is why we chose to start with the poorest and most neglected communities in the north of Congo.
Henri Samoutou is a Senior Ophthalmic Technician with surgical skills, and Joyce Samoutou-Wong is a Family Doctor. Together, they founded New Sight Eye Care because of their calling. Joyce and Henri said, “We want to use the medical skills that God has blessed us with as a vehicle to bring hope to the blind and their loved ones in Africa. Medical ministry is not cheap, but we simply cannot put a price tag on sight.” That continues to be their motivation for this exciting life-transforming project.
New Sight Eye Care is a charity registered in the UK and in Hong Kong. Following the successful establishment of our first non-profit eye centre in Impfondo in the Republic of Congo, at the invitation and with the support of local authorities, we are extending our services through the construction and fitting out of a new comprehensive teaching eye hospital in Ouesso which is due to open in 2024. This strategic location will enable us to reach the whole country and surrounding nations.
